Picture Book: My Daddy is a Monster

2024 Sharjah International Illustration Award Winner.
One day after school, Shui Hai suddenly heard a "gurgling" sound coming from the bathroom.
To his surprise, a huge green monster emerged from the bathtub!
Fortunately, this monster was not scary at all.
He had an endearingly clumsy body and amiable eyes.
He helped Shui Hai finish the sailboat that daddy had left incomplete, taught a lesson to the "werewolf" who often bullied Shui Hai at school, and even took Shui Hai to the ocean he had always dreamed of visiting! Gradually, Shui Hai began to feel that this monster seemed just like daddy...

2024年シャルジャ国際イラストレーション賞受賞。
ある日の放課後、シュイハイは突然バスルームから「ゴボゴボ」という音が聞こえてきました。
驚いたことに、巨大な緑色の怪物がバスタブから現れました！
幸いなことに、この怪物はまったく怖くありませんでした。
愛くるしいほど不器用な体と愛嬌のある目をしていました。
彼はシュイハイがパパが完成させなかった帆船を完成させるのを手伝い、学校でシュイハイをよくいじめていた「狼男」に教訓を与え、シュイハイがずっと訪れることを夢見ていた海に連れて行きました！
次第に、シュイハイはこの怪物がパパに似ていると感じるようになりました... 

Judges' comments

アニメのような世界観が印象的な作品です。
懐かしさやあたたかさの感じられるイラストのタッチと、優しいストーリーの雰囲気がしっかりマッチしていると思います。

It's an impressive piece with an anime-like worldview.
The illustrations, which have a nostalgic and warm feel, match perfectly with the gentle atmosphere of the story.

主人公がバスルームで不思議な生物に出会い、困惑している後ろ姿が可愛く、ノスタルジックで優しい色調も心地よく、可愛らしい作品に描き上がっていて素晴らしいと思います。

The protagonist encounters a mysterious creature in the bathroom and her confused back view is adorable.
The nostalgic, gentle colors are pleasant to look at and the resulting cute piece is wonderful.

学校や日常生活から奇想天外の生き物が飛び出してくるシーン、いずれも繊細なタッチで親しみやすく、大人も癒される、綺麗なイラストだと思いました。

The scenes in which fantastical creatures pop out from school and everyday life are all delicately illustrated and easy to relate to, and I thought they were beautiful illustrations that would be soothing to adults as well.

いかにも子供達が興味を持ちそうなテーマですね。
大きくて愛嬌のあるモンスター、自宅や学校といった身近な環境で起こるできごと、子供達の心がすぐに物語の中に入り込むのが想像できます。

This is definitely a theme that kids would be interested in.
With big, lovable monsters and events that take place in familiar environments like home and school, it's easy to imagine children quickly becoming immersed in the story.
