Picture Book: Mom Is A Sea Fairy

Artist's comments

☆The author and illustrator are the winners of the first prize of the Feng Zikai Children's Picture Book Award.
☆New Name Award of the 2024 Image of the Book Award.
☆China Good Book Monthly List in July 2024. Mom is going to be away from home for a week to go diving in the ocean.
In her luggage, she packed a diving suit, an underwater camera, and various dark pieces of equipment.
In her daughter's eyes, the diving suit was as strange and magical as a black robe.
With it on, mom could actually stay in the sea.
So, she began to wonder, could mom be a fairy living in the ocean?
Just like the flying fairy riding a broom.
During this time, the mother and daughter communicated their lives to each other through letters.
Mom described the various kinds of sea creatures she encountered.
The daughter imagined mom meeting mermaids and dangerous sea monsters.
Gradually, the daughter started to introduce her new friends and new experiences in life.
She imagined herself diving into the ocean and joining mom in the underwater world.
She even drew these fantasies.
Through a transparent film that could be flipped left and right, the underwater world where mom was and the world in the daughter's imagination overlapped.
This was the moment when the mother and daughter's hearts were connected.
Mom is not only a hero in her daughter's heart but also an image of a brave and independent woman.
Influenced by her mom, the daughter gradually found her own interests and direction through her own exploration.

お母さんは海に潜るために1週間家を離れる予定です。
荷物には、ダイビングスーツ、水中カメラ、さまざまな暗い装備を詰め込んでいました。
娘の目には、ダイビングスーツは黒いローブのように奇妙で魔法のようでした。
それを着ると、お母さんは実際に海にとどまることができます。
それで、彼女は、お母さんは海に住む妖精なのだろうかと考え始めました。
ほうきに乗って空飛ぶ妖精のように。 この間、母と娘は手紙を通してお互いの生活を伝えました。
お母さんは、出会ったさまざまな海の生き物について説明しました。
娘は、お母さんが人魚や危険な海の怪物に出会うことを想像しました。
徐々に、娘は新しい友達や人生の新しい経験を紹介し始めました。
娘は海に飛び込んで、お母さんと一緒に水中の世界に飛び込む自分を想像し、その空想を描いたりもしました。
左右にめくることのできる透明なフィルムを通して、お母さんのいる水中の世界と娘の想像の中の世界が重なり合いました。
母と娘の心がつながった瞬間でした。
娘にとって、お母さんはヒーローであるだけでなく、勇敢で自立した女性のイメージでもあります。
娘はお母さんの影響を受けて、自分の探求を通して徐々に自分の興味や方向性を見つけていきます。

Judges' comments

映像作品を見ているかのような様々なアングルからとらえられたイラストが印象的です。
見開きページの左右のバランスも美しく描かれており、絵本自体のクオリティにもしっかりイラストが貢献していると感じました。

The illustrations are impressive, captured from various angles as if watching a film.
The left and right sides of the double-page spread are beautifully balanced, and I felt that the illustrations really contributed to the quality of the picture book itself.

なんとも爽やかなブルーの色あいが、各ページの主人公たちの心の波を映しているようであり、構図も非常に考え込まれている作品です。 シンプルな感じの線でありながら、家族の絆を感じさせ描きこまれた微笑ましくも作家の力を感じます。

The refreshing blue color seems to reflect the emotional ups and downs of the protagonists on each page, and the composition is extremely well thought out.
The lines are simple, but the artist's skill is apparent in the detailed depiction, which conveys a sense of family bond.

少女の素直な夢の世界と、穏やかな日常生活が優しいタッチで繰り広げられています。
構図とデッサンが上手く織りなし、素敵に仕上がっている作品だと思います。

The girl's innocent dream world and her peaceful daily life are depicted with a gentle touch.
The composition and drawing are skillfully woven together to create a beautifully finished piece.

私がまず違和感を感じたのは、幼い子供と父親を残して、母親が何故一人でダイビングツアーに1週間も行ったのかという点です。
本格的な装備を身につけているのを見ると、彼女はプロダイバーで、仕事をするために行ったのかも知れません。
父親と子供は、そんな母親を応援しているのでしょう。二人で留守番を楽しんでいるように感じます。
美しい珊瑚礁の絵が心に残ります。

The first thing that struck me as odd was why the mother would leave her young child and father behind to go on a week-long diving trip alone. Seeing that she was wearing full equipment, it seemed likely that she was a professional diver and had gone off to work.
The father and child were probably cheering on their mother.
It seemed as though the two of them were enjoying being at home alone.
The beautiful pictures of the coral reef stayed in my mind.
