Judges' comments

There are illustrations filled with sound. To create them, artists needs a special skill. Perhaps even magic? When I look at Ann Petite's works, I hear a quiet rustle, like a whisper. It is emitted by petals, blades of grass, and light ripples on the water. I see the wind. How it carries away the transparent wings of dragonflies and sways the plants. All these details create magic.

I really enjoy how Ann builds a rich and poetic visual language through her painterly strokes and delicate textures. There's a strong narrative running through the series, but it's delivered in a quiet, contemplative way. The layering of shapes and colors creates an immersive dreamscape that draws the viewer in. I especially love how each piece feels emotionally distinct while still tied together as a cohesive world.

It’s evident that the artist excels at handling large, intricate compositions — a task that requires great patience and refined technique. The subtle treatment of color variations reveals a rich palette hidden within the overall harmony. The bold use of dark tones makes the main subjects stand out even more.

The works demonstrate a strong sense of scale, placing a small character in vast, immersive environments. Each illustration employs a distinct compositional strategy, keeping the visual narrative dynamic and surprising. The obsessive repetition of intricate, rhythmic details adds depth and texture, creating a dreamlike, enveloping atmosphere.

The artist's characters are like those fairy tale elves that shuttle among the stamens of the flowers, so miniature that you have to use a magnifying glass to catch and to trace their movements, which I find very fascinating. In addition, the soft coral worm-like texture of the plants and their colour scheme add a touch of mystery and unease ambiance to the adventure.
