Judges' comments

First of all, I want to talk about the uniqueness of the artist's technique. Park Byungje's illustrations are incredibly tangible. Looking at them, you literally feel the texture of the fabric with your fingertips. It is like a modern interpretation of tapestry canvases that were so beloved in past centuries. What is even more amazing is that the works are done by hand, on paper. This is truly a lot of work and patience, which develops into meditation.

Very unique and artistic. Byungie really nailed it with the texture work in this series. I do think the placement of the abundant colors and shapes could be more considered—bringing a bit more order might help the visuals land even stronger.

This series exudes a fantastical atmosphere, likely due to the artist’s choice of vivid, luxurious colors combined with light and shadow to create a neon-like effect. It’s also impressive how the artist, using only pen and ink, achieves silkscreen-like delicate color gradations and a texture reminiscent of washi paper or woven fabric.

Park Byungje’s works stand out for their unique crosshatching technique and bold color palette that evokes a nostalgic mid-century aesthetic. Each illustration is composed of layered geometric shapes, often referencing architecture, nature, and everyday life. The use of vibrant intersecting tones not only creates depth but also suggests movement and atmosphere. The consistent stylization across all works reinforces a clear authorial voice while allowing room for poetic interpretation.

I appreciate the artist's reverent approach to his work. The intertwining coloured pen marks, varying in degree, resemble the texture of stitches on a piece of fabric. By recording the trajectory of time, the artist divides the pictorial space of the artwork, creating a stylised dimension on the panel that completes his intended visual narrative.
