Artist's comments

1. A mock book cover reinterpreting the Chinese Fable The Tiger and the Fox into a whimsical Childlike fantasy of Japanese yokai and a yatai noodle stall seller.
2. Creatively, the protagonist, Kiko, catches frogs by luring them into his soup in a fun, inefficient method. The frogs are tricked into thinking they're going to an Onsen.
3. A repeatable pattern used inside a book featuring characters and some Udon ingredients.

Judges' comments

The illustrations of NYROOM are based on a funny culinary story. The sly fox and the naive frogs—the characters of this fairy tale make me smile and wait for the story to continue. I also really like how the artist uses traditional flavor in combination with modern techniques and the dynamics of the plot.

Love the linework and color choices—feels happy and playful. There's a nice flow in the composition, and the tone fits the story really well. Some areas could use a bit more depth or clarity, but overall it’s fun and visually charming.

Max Liu

The use of complementary colors and harmonious tonal shifts in the illustration perfectly matches its fantastical style. The artwork is rich in intricate details and carries a strong sense of narrative. The depiction of the starry sky in the background further enhances the magical atmosphere of the scene.

NYROOM’s works show confident visual storytelling and a strong sense of composition. Each image is rich in detail, with expressive characters and a distinctive palette. The illustrations blend traditional sensibility with digital clarity, creating rhythmic linework and decorative power. Symbolism and references to folklore or mythology enrich the narrative and give the work a layered meaning.

Nadiia Zhelieznova

As one of the few entrants to the competition with designs for book cover, this artist has used an oriental visual language combined with regional culinary symbols. Her artwork features elaborate compositions, unique colour schemes and a childlike innocence, leaving a deep visual impression.
