A little cicada, in order to save a stubborn old ox, had no choice but to bite its nose.
The ox became furious and chased the cicada all the way, which inadvertently led it out of the fiery inferno.
The old ox realized that the cicada had acted out of kindness, and they became inseparable friends.
However, the cicada's lifespan was shorter than that of the ox.
Before it died, it entrusted its offspring to the old ox.
As the seasons changed, the old ox remained steadfast and loyal, even guarding the cicada eggs in the freezing winter.
It was not until the cicada's children climbed up the tree that the old ox closed its eyes for the last time.

小さな蝉は頑固な老牛を救うために鼻を噛むしかありませんでした。
牛は激怒し、蝉をずっと追いかけ、うっかりして火の海から蝉を導き出しました。
老牛は蝉が親切心からの行動だと気づき、二人は切っても切れない友達になりました。
しかし、蝉の寿命は牛よりも短かったので、死ぬ前に蝉は子供を老牛に託しました。
季節が変わっても、老牛は忠実で忠実であり続け、凍えるような冬でも蝉の卵を守りました。
蝉の子供が木に登るまで、老牛は最後に目を閉じませんでした。 

Judges' comments

絵本ではあまり見かけないタッチで、東洋的なが美しい色合いが印象に残りました。
挿絵ではなく、１カットずつが一つの作品として仕上がっている点が素晴らしいと感じました。

The beautiful oriental colors, which are not often seen in picture books, left a strong impression on me.
I thought it was wonderful that each cut was a work of art in itself, rather than just an illustration.

情感がある構図とイラストのタッチに力強い才能を感じる。
静かな絵なのに、語りかけてくるものがあり、読者側の想像力を膨らませ、心の聴力を広げる不思議な力がある絵だと思う。
児童書の挿絵は、子供たちの想像力を養う役目もある仕事であるので、こういった不思議な力がある作家の作品となることは、非常に嬉しい。

I sense powerful talent in the emotional composition and illustrative touch.
Even though the pictures are quiet, they are communicative and have the mysterious power to expand the reader's imagination and broaden the hearing of the heart.
Illustrating children's books is a job that also has the role of nurturing children's imagination, so I am extremely pleased to see a work by an artist with such a mysterious power.

優しくて心温まる絵本は、世界の子供達、全ての世代に受けいられ、愛される作品だと思います。

"I've seen this somewhere before!" I realized how popular the series is, with so many of them published both in Japan and overseas. I believe that these gentle, heartwarming picture books are accepted and loved by children of all generations around the world.

The first thing that caught my eye was the beauty of the pictures.
The illustrations are mysterious, seemingly flat but with depth.
It's easy to see why this book has won numerous picture book awards.
