In his illustrations, Zhu Qimin works extremely skillfully with the light. There are wandering lights in the forest, the magic flower pollen, the glowing lines along the contours of objects and figures... Such accents are able to create a fairy tale and a mysterious atmosphere. Combined with unexpected perspectives, intricate compositions, and whimsical and festive details, it turned out to be a truly interesting and emotional experience reading Hoffmann's Christmas story.

The rich and saturated use of colors in Zhu’s paintings is impressive and really makes the series stand out. I enjoy exploring this playful, dream-like fantasy world—it feels like an Odyssey of the Nutcracker. That said, I believe the visuals could be pushed even further if the color saturation were balanced a bit more carefully. Creating areas of rest would help reduce visual busyness and give the viewer’s eyes a place to breathe.

Resembling scenes from an animated film, the artwork makes extensive use of flowing curves, giving the impression of constant motion. The bright, cheerful color palette creates a dreamlike world.

Zhu Qimin’s work is bursting with vibrant energy and theatrical emotion. The glowing outlines and bold color contrasts create a magical, illuminated world. The characters are expressive and dynamic, often captured in motion or dramatic poses. Complex compositions, unusual angles, and a strong sense of rhythm give each scene a cinematic quality. There’s a clear narrative thread connecting the illustrations, making the viewer feel immersed in an epic, dreamlike adventure.

The author intentionally kept the lines to outline and strengthen the edges of the silhouettes, and the visual effect produced by this technique is reminiscent of the glittering arrays of lanterns at traditional Chinese festivals. In addition, the highly saturated and intense use of colours, together with the dynamic expressions of the characters and the rhythmic styling, creates a feast for the eyes full of musicality. It is as if I can hear the dialogue of the characters in the picture planes with the accompaniment of the background music.
